Can You have Two Routers in One House? Considerations for Connecting Two Routers

Can you have two routers in one house? A broadband at home, or a broadband at a company, can be connected to multiple wireless routers. Let us take home broadband access to two routers as an example to illustrate the problem.

can you have two routers in one house

Home broadband, everyone basically chooses telecommunications, or China Unicom, which is the only broadband provider. Too few businesses have led to arrogance. Although so many years have passed, how many people have shouted that the speed of broadband is false, but people still I'll go my own way, there's no other way, we won't discuss this.

A piece of broadband at home wants to access more than two routers. Generally speaking, because the area of ??the home is too large, one router cannot effectively cover the area of ??the home.

Therefore, according to the location of the home, the two routers can be reasonably distributed in effective locations, so that every corner of the home can be connected to the wireless WiFi smoothly, especially the location of the bathroom and balcony.

The basic principle of setting up two routers for one broadband: when entering the home optical fiber, the optical fiber is connected first, then the optical fiber is connected to the wireless router, and the second wireless router is connected to the first wireless router.

The two routers can be bridged, wired or wireless. Let’s briefly introduce them.

1. Router LAN port bridge

The LAN port of the main router is connected to the LAN port of the secondary router, and the secondary router is used as a wireless switch and used as a wireless relay. The main router only needs to configure the Internet according to the instructions. The secondary router needs to modify the IP address of the LAN port. In the LAN port settings, change the IP address to the IP address of the same network segment, such as the main router's IP 192.168.2.1, and the secondary router's IP address. is 192.168.2.100. At the same time, it is necessary to disable the DHCP service function on the secondary router in the parameter settings.

Finally, set the wireless SSID, encryption method and password of the secondary router, save and restart the router to complete the router bridging.

2. Router WAN port bridging

The LAN port of the main router is connected to the WAN port of the sub-router, and the configuration of the main router is the same as normal. Modify the IP address of the LAN port of the secondary router to a different network segment from that of the primary router. For example, the IP address of the primary router is 192.168.1.1, the IP address of the LAN port of the secondary router is changed to 192.168.3.1, and the access mode of the secondary router is to obtain an IP address automatically. Set the wireless SSID name and password of the secondary router, and select the "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption" method. The cascade bridging of the WAN port of the router cannot realize the mutual access of the local area network or the automatic roaming function of the wireless WiFi.

3. Router WDS wireless bridge

The wireless bridging (WDS) function of the router can extend the wireless network wirelessly, and the needs of wireless expansion and roaming can be achieved with simple settings. All operations of Wireless Bridging (WDS) are set on the secondary router, no need to set the primary router.

First, modify the IP address of the LAN port of the secondary router. If the IP address of the primary router is 192.168.1.1, then the secondary router will be modified to 192.168.1.2. Scan the WiFi signal of the primary router in the wireless network settings – WDS settings. If the main router is a dual-band router, WDS bridging cannot be set at both Hz and 2.4GHz. You can only select one of the frequency bands for bridging, and then set the wireless SSID, password, encryption method, etc. of the secondary router. If you need to implement WiFi automatic roaming, the wireless parameter settings of the main router must be the same, and the DHCP server function of the secondary router needs to be turned off.

At this point, the wireless bridge (WDS) setting is completed, and the wired computer can connect to the LAN port of the primary and secondary routers to access the Internet. The wireless terminal equipment can realize wireless roaming between the primary and secondary routers in the process of moving. In terms of stability, the router bridge can use the LAN port wired bridge method, the wireless is stable and smooth, and it is recommended to use it.

4. There are 3 places that need special attention:

4.1 The optical modem is connected to the WAN port of the first router, and the LAN port of the first router is connected to the WAN port of the second router.

4.2 Turn on the DHCP server of the first router and turn off the DHCP server of the second router.

4.3 The IP addresses of the two routers, pay attention to the segmentation. For example, the IP address of the first router starts with 192.168.1.* (* represents 2 to 254), and the second router should avoid this and replace it with 192.168 .6.*, that is, the third digit must be different.

The setting method of the two routers is the same, but for the second router, you can think of the network provided by the first router as a broadband.

However, in addition to accessing 2 routers at the same time, we can also consider simpler methods, such as a router + a signal amplifier, or a distributed router. These setting methods are much simpler than a broadband access to 2 routers. more and more stable.
